Beyond The Falls in the Buffalo/Niagara Region
Just seven miles north of the Falls are the villages of Lewiston and Youngstown. You’ll enjoy waterfront parks and the splendor of the lower Niagara River and a rich variety of year-round cultural programming. ArtPark, a visual and performing summer arts center, features activities and concerts for all tastes. The Niagara Power Project’s Power Vista features exhibits on energy, electricity and local history. Youngstown was one of the first settlements to grow outside Old Fort Niagara, which was the site of historic battles and sieges, trading and conquest. Also in Youngstown, the magnificence and natural beauty of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine is highlighted by a Dome Basilica, at the top of which stands a 13-foot, ten-ton, Vermont granite statue of Our Lady of Fatima. The Avenue of the Saints features over one hundred life-size marble statues representing Saints from every race and walk of life.
Lockport, named after the many waterway locks in and around the city, was once an important canal city and still retains its 19th century charm. Many of the locks continue to function as they did over 150 years ago. Two interesting canal perspectives you’ll enjoy are the Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises, and the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride. A collection of artifacts are at the Niagara County Historical Society.
Nestled between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario is the Niagara Wine Trail. Spend the day traveling from one winery to another tasting the best this region has to offer.
