Located a few minutes east of the city is the township of Clarence, the oldest township in Erie County. Founded in 1808, the first person to buy land in the township was Joseph Ellicott, a prominent member of the region who designed such landmarks as Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo. The first official resident of the town was Asa Ransom, after which the Asa Ransom House is named. This building, now an inn and restaurant, offers a taste of the historic lifestyle of the early settlers. One of Clarence’s more modern settlers is Wilson Greatbach, the inventor of the implanted heart pacemaker. A gold mine for antique collectors, Clarence is home to numerous antique dealers, co-ops and specialty shops. Farmer’s and flea markets are yours for the taking during the weekends. Don’t miss the national pumpkin weigh-off in October, part of the festivities at the Great Pumpkin Farm during the fall season.
