Arts
Buffalo boasts the largest concentration of theatres in New York State outside of New York City. Highlighting our theatre district is Shea’s Performing Arts Center, entertaining us with traveling Broadway productions, touring troupes, concerts, opera, dance and children’s shows. The Irish Classical Theatre hosts first-rate productions of Irish, American and International plays. Also performing are Road Less Traveled Productions, Alleyway Theatre, Ujima Theatre, Kavinoky Theatre and the Theatre of Youth. Buffalo’s Elmwood Village is the home to the Burchfield Penney Art Center, a gallery dedicated to the art and culture of Western New York and across the street, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is an outstanding center of modern and contemporary art. CEPA Gallery, in the Market Arcade, features photography as well as videos and film. The Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University displays modern and contemporary art. A satellite gallery is located in downtown Niagara Falls. The Niagara Arts and Cultural Center is devoted to the performing and visual arts. WNY’s largest multi-venue performing and visual arts organization is University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts in Amherst. Also in Amherst is MusicalFare Theatre, developing and presenting new musicals, new versions of traditional musicals and area premieres. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra presents classics and pops concerts in the acoustic perfection of Kleinhan’s Music Hall. The Buffalo Chamber Music Society calls Kleinhan’s their home too. Summertime favorites include BPO at Artpark in nearby Lewiston, overlooking the Niagara Gorge, and Shakespeare in Delaware Park - the second largest outdoor Shakespeare festival in the country. Our culture-rich atmosphere pleases even the most discerning artful palate.
