Get Your Irish On

In this blog Meredith DeLuca highlights some of the 716’s best ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s day is right around the corner and you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy these fun activities. Whether you want to celebrate by learning something new, enjoying a show, or getting into shenanigans with a pint, these ideas are great for St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish Classical Theatre
The Irish are known for their wit and their way with words. A brilliant showcase of Irish writing and acting can be found at the Irish Classical Theatre. Of course it doesn’t need to be St. Patrick’s Day to enjoy the Irish Classical Theatre, but if you’ve never gone then St. Patrick’s day is the perfect excuse to visit. “The Night Alive” is a dark comedy featuring modern day Dubliners and their daily struggles and shenanigans.

“The Night Alive” runs until March 25th.

 Buffalo Irish Center
It’s been a bit of a rough year for the Buffalo Irish Center. After being robbed earlier this year they lost irreplaceable pictures, documents and money. However, the Irish are known for their tenacious spirit especially when it comes to overcoming hardship, and slowly but surely the Buffalo Irish Center has gotten back on their feet. (To donate to the Buffalo Irish Center’s Go Fund me click here Support this important part of keeping Irish history alive by enjoying one of the many St. Patrick’s Day events the Buffalo Irish Center has to offer. We’ll definitely be joining them for their Cranberries Tribute to Dolores O’Riordan on Friday March 16th at 8:00 PM.

From Irish dancing, to classical music and new renditions, there’s plenty of ways to celebrate at the Buffalo Irish Center.

Gene McCarthy’s / Old First Ward Brewing Company
While we understand that there’s more to St. Patrick’s Day than just drinking, there really is no place to celebrate the holiday quite like a good old-fashioned Irish Pub. Enjoy traditional Irish fare of corned beef and cabbage while you sip on a nice cold beer. We love that The Old First Ward Brewing Company prides itself on brewing such a wide range of beers. You can truly taste the tradition in everything they do. The Old First Ward parade goes right in front of Gene McCarthy’s so take a break and have a pint.

Gene McCarthy’s is located at 73 Hamburg Street, Buffalo, NY.

The Eagle House
Enjoy some of Buffalo’s best Irish dancing from step-dancing troupe Clann Na Cara on March 15th at 6:30. Start your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations off with a kick! The Eagle House will also be serving Irish Fare from March 15th-18th. On March 17th enjoy live music from the Bar Room Buzzards.

Don’t miss the Barroom Buzzards at the Eagle House.

Larkin Square
On Friday March 16th start your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at Larkin Square for their 6th annual Live at O’Larkin. From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM enjoy an appearance from the Greater Buffalo Firefighters Pipes and Drums, food trucks and Irish fare from the filling station, live music by the band McCarthyizm, and Irish dancers from Clann na Cara. Did we mention admission is free?

Live at O’Larkin in Larkin Square is the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish immigrants were amongst this area’s earliest settlers. They helped to make Buffalo what it is today with their contributions in industry during the 19th century. Today, we celebrate those contributions whether those individuals were our ancestors or not. You certainly do not have to be Irish to join the hooley and enjoy all the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations that the 716 has to offer. Sláinte!
